PACS and RIS – what is it?

PACS and RIS are acronyms of English names of two ICT systems used in medicinewhich significantly improved the work of doctors and technicians. Below their short characteristics.. Below their short characteristics.

PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System)

PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System). designed for fast and convenient archiving, distribution and access to images from many different diagnostic modalities (machines).. It is an information system consisting of:

  • diagnostic work stations,
  • server for image archiving,
  • printer interface,
  • interfaces of machines generating images,
  • retrieving work stations.
  • retrieving work stations.

RIS (Radiology Information System)

RIS also called Radiology Information System, for managing medical imagery and associated data. It manages the path from patients’ registration, examination to the description delivery. It allows to optimize all process and to improve workflow.

In summary, both systems allow collecting, retrieving and archiving data. The difference between them regards the fact that PACS is responsible for the access to images, while RIS for the access to their descriptions and other patients’ records.. Using both systems, data can be easily managed and examination results remotely consulted with other specialists.

Use of PACS and RIS

Modern solutions such as PACS and RIS are perfect for use both in a small and larger medical facility.. They are ideal for small medical offices as well as for multi-ward hospitals, improving workflow everywhere.

Teleradiology of XXI century, using those systems, allows convenient, remote consultation of examination’s results which significantly shortens the time to their delivery. It improves the level of patients’ services which results in their increasing satisfaction.

Convenience of radiological e-consultations

Systems enabling the electronic radiological consultations are an excellent solution. They safe time needed to complete orders and perform examinations(random image can be consulted electronically with a specialist from the other side of the country in a few moments). They also reduce costs associated with the manual handling of any medical images. Moreover, contemporary IT systems are very secure and provide the highest quality of services All patients’ data, including archival data, are available immediately, at any time and device.

The benefits of using information systems in patients’ service are difficult to overstate. No wonder that more and more institutions decide to use them in their daily work.
